Kurt von Fritz exiled

My oldest sister – Luise von Fritz – has lived in New York since 1935. Her husband Prof. Dr. Kurt von Fritz is a “Reichsdeutscher” [German citizen].

Editor’s note: Prof. Dr. Kurt von Fritz refused to swear the Diensteid [official oath] [swearing loyalty to Adolf Hitler] in 1934. He and Karl Barth were the only two university professors in all of Germany known to have done so.

In April 1935, he was removed from his professorship. Initially he and his wife (Manfred Eickemeyer’s sister) went to Munich. But at the beginning of 1936, he was forced into exile. He went to New York, where he taught at some of the most prestigious universities in the United States.

It is fascinating that Manfred Eickemeyer mentioned this sister and brother-in-law at all, and even more fascinating that he mentioned them first.
