Alexander Schmorell arguments with father
[Alexander Schmorell, speaking about his issues with the Oath of Allegiance in 1937]: For clarification, my then-C.O. brought my father in for advice. He later told me that as a German, my father was insulted by my attitude toward Russia. My father told me this himself very clearly recently, so that we have had petty arguments about it.
Date of January 31, 1943 is “estimate” only. Since Alexander Schmorell identified the arguments as a “recent” matter – but dating all the way back to 1937 – it is helpful to understand the familial pressures the students faced.-Ed.
